The slip knot is extremely important in crochet as the start of almost all projects. It'll be the first thing you do for pretty much any crochet project you begin/complete, so it's important to get used to it!
How to make a slip knot–in word form (worded for right-handed crocheters):
- Hold the yarn tail between your left thumb and middle finger.
- Wrap the working yarn around your left middle and index finger to create an X. Bring the working yarn all the way around and hold it between your left ring finger and pinky. At this point, there should be an X of yarn where your left palm is facing you and there should be two parallel lines of yarn when your left palm is facing away from you.
- With your left palm facing away from you, bring your hook underneath the first parallel line and hook it onto the second parallel line.
- Bring your hook out from underneath the first parallel line and remove your fingers from the loops.
- Pull the hook and yarn tightly until there's a clear and tight loop around your hook.
